R&D summary of wave-type upwelling pump

 

1) Research background

Humankind faces two challenges: climate change (causes of disasters, etc.) and population growth (food crisis, etc.).
CO2 reduction alone is not enough to deal with greenhouse gases, which are thought to be the cause of climate change.
It is also necessary to suppress the generation of methane, which has a greenhouse effect 25 times greater than that of CO2.
(Currently, it is not being discussed in Japan. In fact, it is a serious topic that goes beyond cow burping.)

In the future, in order for humankind to maintain sustainable development, smarter and innovative technologies that reduce the financial burden while inputting resources and energy are required.

 2) What is a wave upwelling pump?

A pump structure that combines a check valve and a pipe is suspended in the sea from below a float (floating body).

Water from the bottom layer can be efficiently pumped up to the surface layer only by the up-and-down motion of the waves.

Because the structure is simple, depending on the size, it is also possible for people involved
in the fishing industry to make their own.

A commercial level upwelling pump was developed by Vershinsky in his 1983.

After that, in 2008, the University of Hawaii and the University of Oregon jointly conducted a demonstration test in the high seas.
(Results Upwelling was confirmed, but the long-term effect could not be verified due to
insufficient strength of the device.)

The developer described the effect as follows: 

By floating many upwelling pumps on the sea, it is possible to recover hundreds of millions of tons of CO2 in the form of plankton.

(2) Plankton ⇒ Small fish and food chains are born, which can be expected to revive marine resources in the installation water area.

(3) The effect of suppressing the generation of water vapor from the cold water in the bottom layer can be expected.

(4) Energy absorption by the upwelling pump results in sea area wave height control.

3) What is NPO Escot’s purpose in doing wave-type upwelling pumps? 

(1) Recovery of fisheries resources (=increased food production in shallow waters near the
coast)

(2) CO2 recovery through plankton multiplication and biosystem recovery/activation

(3)Suppression of surface water temperature rise by vertical (vertical) stirring of seawater
(reduction of summer typhoons and winter heavy snow disasters by suppressing water vapor generation)

* Abnormally high sea surface temperature: 1 mm water layer absorbs all infrared rays (wavelengths of 3 μm or longer)

(4) Suppression of methane generation from organic sediment
(accumulated in estuaries, lakes, and dam lakes)

* Oxygen supply by vertical stirring (from anaerobic decomposition to aerobic decomposition)* Preventing methanation of carbon has the same effect as reducing emissions of his 24
molecules of CO2

4) What are the features of the wave motion upwelling pump?
 

(1) Even small waves of several centimeters can pump bottom water to the surface.

Until now, demonstration tests conducted overseas have been with large upwelling pumps.
Many of these devices required meter wave heights due to their check valve construction.

(2)By improving the valve body and float buoy

* Open and close with minute amplitude by wide left and right non-uniform valve
* Elastic material is used to generate closing force (generally, gravity type opening and
closing)

*Both the fluid resistance and the drainage resistance are reduced due to the slanted cut at
the tip.

* The lift effect is given by the shape of the buoy and the unbalanced load.

(3) DIY support by using general-purpose products (low cost)

* Uses sewage piping (VU pipe and fittings) available anywhere except check valves

*Old tires are used for the elastic body that assists opening and closing

(4)Easy to introduce, move, repair, remove and discard

*Since the upwelling pipe is a drainage pipe made of PVC, it can be obtained cheaply
anywhere in the country.

*Reduction of separation work at the time of disposal due to the use of a single material

(5)Remove shellfish, seaweed, etc. from the pipe and agitate seafloor nutrients

(6) Equipped with a function to sweep out low-level water to the downstream of the sea
surface current

(7) There is a combined effect with the principle of Stommel’s permanent line.

*The principle of water temperature difference upwelling works even when the upwelling
pipe is near the surface of the water with a high water temperature and there are no waves.
